It is a spiritual practice that engages both your physical being & your mind. Also, It’s proven to alleviate many psychological issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

Above that, meditation is a haven within our busy routines where we resort to achieving inner peace and serenity. It is a safe house wherein we refresh our minds & body while sustaining our positive energy. Let alone, it helps us cope with the never-ending stress posed by our lives.

However, maintaining a consistent habit of meditating every day can be a challenging task. Especially, if you have a tight schedule, and you’re seemingly overwhelmed by endless responsibilities during workdays. Therefore, finding the best time to meditate can help you turn meditation from a barren activity into a fruitful experience. Thus, it’ll make your day a lot better and your life much easier.

Still, let’s assume that you’ve succeeded in adding meditation to your daily routine. The question remains, is there a best time of day to meditate? Or in other words, when is the best time to practice meditation? So that you can reap the benefits of mindfulness and inner calmness. Is there a golden hour (or hours) when meditation is most fruitful? Let’s find out!

What Is The Best Time To Meditate?

Most meditation experts agree that there are certain hours of the day when meditating is most beneficial. For instance, meditating in the early hours of the morning is highly effective for individuals. They also agree that meditation is a unique experience, and it varies from one person to another. Accordingly, it doesn’t matter when you prefer to meditate. What matters is to make it a consistent habit of your daily routine. Especially, considering that we all live in a busy world.

As mentioned above, there are golden times (hours) that make the best time to meditate and achieve greater results. Usually, these times are the early hours before sunrise starting from 3 A.M to 6 A.M.

Meditation experts encourage people to meditate within the Ambrosial Hours, and it is allegedly a sacred period that begins 90 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before dawn. It’s claimed that within this period, your mind is in its utmost clarity and stillness. So, it can easily reach a deeper state of meditation and connectedness with oneself and the universe.

Although the ambrosial hours are highly recommended by gurus, it’s hard to abide by them given our busy lifestyle. Nevertheless, meditation remains a personal experience, and there isn’t a conventional pattern or path to realizing inner serenity and mindfulness. It is a journey to find oneself and grow along with it. So, as long as you make time to practice every day, you will always reach a state of inner safety and stillness.

Best Time to Meditate: Morning V.S Evening

So far, we’ve agreed that there isn’t one perfect time or method to meditate. Also, the practice of meditation differs from one individual to another. However, you might wonder which is better: a) Meditating in the morning, or b) Meditating during the evening after a long day of work?

Simply put, the answer is partially dependent on your lifestyle & personality. For example, if you’re an early bird, and you usually wake up early; then, meditating in the morning will be best for you. On the other hand, if you’re a night owl, meditating during the evening after work is the ideal timing for you.

Now, you might ask yourself, what does being an early bird or a night owl have to do with meditation? 

Well, each one of us has a certain time of day when we’re relatively in a better mood, have more energy, and love spending time doing what we like to do (chilling!). Some people like waking up early to exercise or practicing Yoga before going to work. Others love watching a movie or reading a book before going to bed. Thus, Meditating when we most feel comfortable is more enjoyable and beneficial, which in turn makes it easier to become a habit.

Apart from that, meditation experts claim that meditating either in the morning or during the evening has different advantages and yields the same health benefits regardless of your choice.

Advantages of Morning Meditation:

  1. When you wake up in the morning, your body tends to have more energy. your mind as well is still clearer and refreshed. Thus, it will be easier to meditate without having to deal with troubling thoughts that make your mind wander off. So, if you want to turn meditating into a habit, the morning is a more convenient time.
  2. Stress during your workday is nearly unavoidable. Still, carving out time to practice a bit of deep mindfulness in the morning can have tremendously positive effects on the rest of your workday. It will reduce stress, cortisol rates in your blood as well as improve your mood & performance.
  3. Because of work stress and pressure, we often find ourselves drained as if someone sucked the life out of us. Our workdays become a long stretch of agony and exhaustion, so practicing morning meditation is advantageous if you’d like to refresh and be energized again throughout your workdays.
  4. In the morning, you’re physically and mentally well-prepared for mindfulness. And most importantly, the environment is usually quiet. So, you’re more likely to focus without being disturbed by your kids, friends, or partners. In a nutshell, it is a great time for sinking into a deeper state of consciousness & inward peace.

Advantages of Evening Meditation:

  1. The primary advantage of evening meditation is that it improves the quality of your sleep & rest. After a long workday of responsibilities, tasks, and challenges, we usually get home drained; thus, practicing meditation before going to bed will help reduce stress and improve your sleep while boosting your recovery for better performance & energy the next day.
  2. If you work night shifts; then, stealing a few minutes of your clock to meditate is a great choice to refresh your body energy. This will have lasting effects on the quality of your mood, well-being, and performance while working at nighttime.
  3. In case you work during the day, and you usually have a stressful morning, it can be hard to concentrate with all those racing thoughts in your mind. That is why meditating in the evening will be more suitable as well as enriching for your physical and spiritual health.
  4. Because we deal with a lot of pressure at work, stress keeps building in, and it influences our well-being and stability. It can lead to insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness, so taking a meditation session before you sleep will help calm your body, reduce stress/ your heart rate, and clear your mind till you fall asleep.

Start your meditation journey right with these steps

  1. First off, make sure you’re sitting comfortably or lying down on your back; whatever you feel most comfortable with. The most important thing is that your body is relaxed and at ease while meditating.
  2. Close your eyes slowly, and if you find it hard to keep them shut, I recommend using cooling eye masks for more comfort. Don’t attempt to control your breathing. Breath in and out naturally.
  3. Concentrate on your breathing with each in-breath & out-breath. Don’t worry if your mind wanders off or your attention shifts away. Always, focus on your breathing, most importantly don’t resist your racing thoughts or try to stop them.
  4. Focus your attention on your body, how it reacts to each single inhale & exhale you take. Try scanning the movement of your chest, shoulders, belly, and ribs. Also, try sensing the energy, and how it vibrates within you as you’re sinking into a deeper concentration.
  5. Keep in mind! You shouldn’t resist your thoughts or try controlling your mind flow (let’s face it you can’t). Just keep shifting your attention to your breathing and position your body comfortably.

As a start, you can keep your meditation sessions brief. You can begin with 3 minutes per sitting, and after getting used to it, you can add extra minutes onward.
