Benefits of cold shower for your health

No doubt! Most people enjoy the feeling of warmth and relaxation we get from hot showers. However, what about cold showers? Can they be as good as hot showers? Well, the answer to this may vary from one person to another. Therefore, in this article, we’ll focus on the health benefits of cold shower instead. This will give you a good idea about some of the benefits of taking a cold bath sometimes.

Cold showers & hydrotherapy

Cold showers are an ancient form of therapy that has been used for centuries to alleviate stress and promote well-being. Also called hydrotherapy, taking cold showers exploit our bodies’ ability to respond to hard conditions where the temperature is low.

In return, this boosts our immunity system & endurance. However, this doesn’t mean that a cold shower is enough to treat any health problem. In other words, cold showers may have a variety of health benefits, but they’re not a treatment.

Regardless of the temperature you prefer, a cold shower should have a temperature below 70F. This temperature is essential to reap the benefits.

What are the benefits of cold shower

Boosts blood circulation

Taking cold showers can improve our blood circulation drastically. That’s because showering in a cold temperature forces our bodies to circulate blood faster & harder to keep us warm. Put differently, when the water temperature is cold, the heart pumps blood intensely throughout the body…to preserve our core temperature. As a result, this strengthens our immunity system and improves recovery from injuries.

That’s why many athletes use cold showers to boost recovery from injuries faster. For instance, when you get injured, a cold shower helps move blood & oxygen to the injured area faster. Thus, it accelerates the recovery process while reducing the risks of inflammation. It also relieves pain & alleviates muscle soreness and fatigue.

On top of that, taking cold showers is very beneficial for people who have diabetes and high blood pressure.

Improves metabolism

It is clear that immersing your body in cold water isn’t enough to lose weight. That’s because it requires many adjustments in lifestyle including following a diet & exercise. However, cold showers can improve your metabolism, which helps the body burn fats faster.  In fact, taking cold showers 3 to 4 times a week can help people with obesity lose weight more efficiently.

Cold water also improves your digestion. That’s because when the temperature is low, your digestive system releases more stomach acid; thus, promoting better digestion.

All this combined can help people with obesity lose more weight faster! I know cold water can be unpleasant to some people. But given its benefits, it is really worth a shot!

So, if you’re struggling with obesity, you can add cold showers to your arsenal. Think of it as an extra part of your diet or exercise.

Releases Endorphins

Endorphins are essential hormones for regulating our mood. They’re produced by the brain to relieve pain, improve mood and alleviate stress. Also called happiness hormones, endorphins are responsible for feelings of pleasure & satisfaction. That’s why they’re important for mental health & well-being.

Well, one of the benefits of cold shower is that it promotes the release of endorphins. In return, this helps reduce stress levels while improving energy levels, focus, and clarity.

Above that, cold water immersion can be used as a form of therapy for serious mental illnesses like depression. Again, this shouldn’t be considered a formal treatment. But, according to a medical study, it is hypothesized that cold showers can help people cope with depression…and lessen the intensity of some of its symptoms.

Mainly, the study states that a cold shower releases an excessive amount of electrical impulses from sensory nerve endings to the brain. Accordingly, this may have an anti-depressive impact due to the high density of cold receptors in the skin.

In other words, taking a 5 minutes cold shower 2 to 3 times a week can help alleviate depressive symptoms. This can make depression treatment more efficient.

Strengthens your immunity system

Exposure to cold water stimulates your body to release white cells, which strengthens your immunity system. This helps the body fight infections and common illnesses like colds and flu.

Additionally, showering with cold water regularly makes you resistant to serious health problems. For example, based on a study, cold showers can prevent diseases like cancer.

The study hypothesizes… that Repeated daily exposure to cold water over many months may boost cancer survival rates and boost anti-tumor immunity.

Personally, this is one of the best benefits of cold shower. That’s because having a strong immunity protects you from many health risks.

Boosts your skin health

Cold showers can also boost your skin health. When you are submerged in cold water, your body creates more sebum, which helps keep your skin moisturized and healthy. Furthermore, cold water has been shown to minimize inflammation and redness while also treating acne outbreaks.

Boosts your hair health

Similar to skin health, cold water can also boost the health of your hair. A cold shower stimulates your scalp, resulting in increased blood flow and enhanced hair growth. Also, cold water has been proven to seal the cuticle of the hair shaft, reducing frizz and keeping your hair healthy and shiny.

In addition, unlike hot water, cold water does not dry up the sebum layer, a naturally lubricated barrier that protects your skin and hair. This makes your hair look healthier and more beautiful.

Improves your sleep quality

One of the most important benefits of showering with cold water is that it might help you sleep better. This is a benefit that is typically associated with hot water. However, a cold shower can also be as effective as a hot shower.

This is because being exposed to cold stimulates the body to create more melatonin, which is necessary for good sleep. Also, because cold showers lower stress levels & relieve pain, they can help you fall asleep quickly and sleep soundly.

Risks & Limitations

Remember! Cold showers are not a medical treatment for any ailment. They should be used in addition to other therapies & treatments but not as alternatives.

Please keep in mind that those on medication for their mental health should not abruptly quit their drugs in favor of any alternative treatment. People who have long-term clinical depression or a diagnosis of bipolar disorder should never utilize cold baths as a substitute for their prescribed medication.

While the majority of individuals find cold showers to be helpful, it does need some getting used to. So, if you’re sick or have immunity issues, cold water may worsen your condition! As it may put too much pressure on your body.

Wrapping up

Cold showers have many benefits for your physical and mental health. And, they can be a great addition to your lifestyle. They may be unpleasant at first, but over time you’ll get used to them.

In the beginning, start by taking a 2 to 3 minutes cold shower. Then, you can extend the time you spend showering as you please.

We hope this article has changed your perspective about cold showers. Given their many health benefits, they’re definitely worth a try.
